New device enables deaf community: For most people, talking on the phone is second nature, but for David Matherly, it is an undesirable and tedious chore that quickly absorbs his mental energy.Matherly, who was born deaf, said the main reason he hated talking on the phone was because others had trouble understanding what he was saying, one of the many symptoms of his medical condition. However, he said his misery was put to an end once he was introduced to Sorenson’s Video Relay Service (SVRS) — a free, 24-hour service that enables the deaf and/or those who are hard of hearing to place and receive calls through a professional American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter via a videophone and a high-speed internet connection. American Sign Language
